In 2004, 2% of all deaths in Australia were due to suicide, with men 4 times more likely to commit suicide than women. Death by suicide among Australia's indigenous population is higher still with 3.6% of all indigenous deaths due to suicide, rising to 6% of all Indigenous deaths in the Northern Territory.
Fortunately, throughout Australia there are many organisations, groups and individuals' working to reduce this avoidable human loss. Researchers, practitioners, community groups, and those who have lived experience of attempting suicide and those bereaved by suicide are all now playing a role in tackling problems associated with suicide.
The Suicide Prevention Australia LiFE Awards, presented on World Suicide Prevention Day, recognise the outstanding contributions of such individuals. The 2006 SPA Life Awards will acknowledge achievement in the areas of suicide awareness, prevention and postvention, as well as individuals and projects that have promoted positive attitudes and offered life affirming support to those in crisis.
Last year's awards were held at Government House and launched by the Governor of NSW. This year's awards ceremony will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel on World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10th, 2006.
Suicide Prevention Australia is now seeking nominations for the 2006 event with the closing date being August 18.
