When a 10-year-old child complained to her parents that she felt something "moving around in her mouth", little did they know her gums had been infested by 15 maggots.
The little girl's mother was stunned when her child was diagnosed with a rare form of Oral Myiasis, a fly lava maggot infection that grows in humans and animals, The Mirror reports.
The infection is so rare that her dentist in the Brazilian capital Brasilia filmed the removal for their records. The sickening footage shows the surgeon painstakingly removing the maggots from the child's gums using a pair of tweezers.
The child's mother Adriana said her daughter had been complaining of a tingling sensation in her gums for a few days.
"I couldn't see anything and she didn't seem to be in pain.
"But then it started getting worse and no matter how much we brushed her teeth she said she still felt something.
"I know my daughter and she is not one to make up stories or lie so eventually I took her to see a dentist.
"I couldn't believe it when they said she had a disease and then started pulling the maggots out. I thought I was going to be sick."
The brave little girl managed to remain calm throughout her ordeal, which the dentist described as "a fairly rare occurrence".
