Topical anaesthetic: Enhancing the patient experience

By Dr Michael Ryan

When we embarked on designing the Ingenuity DentalCare System and writing the Dental Solution Guides, we identified that to improve the patient experience we needed to understand that experience better - to put ourselves into the shoes of the patients.

What we discovered was that if we could reduce the pain and fear, we could improve the experience. A large part of the "poor experience" was related to the injections; on investigation, we uncovered that the topical anesthetic used tasted really bad and took quite a while to work. We then set about investigating how we could source a topical anesthetic that tasted great and worked quickly using the latest technologies for absorption in the oral area. We also wanted it in a gel so it would be stable and last to the end of the receptacle it came in and that could be used in Australia. Guess what - no luck. So we worked with a pharmacology team expert in pain relief management and compounding and designed a brand new topical that met all our needs. To improve the patient experience, to reduce the discomfort and deliver a great taste that has the patient enjoying something that distracts them from the treatment. It was an imperative for our own practices, so we know it will help yours.

A solution that works

Over the last year we have trialled it in our practices with great feedback; we have trialled it with DHSV and supplying some specialist practices. We are excited to say the feedback has been wonderful and we are able to offer this to all practices. If you are interested in improving the patient experience in a practical way and you would like to buy some of this great topical, email us for an order form on and we would be pleased to share this dental solution with you too. We have just released bubblegum and have other flavours in the pipeline. It works fast, stores well, as a gel it acts effectively in the mouth and in some practices it is used in place of local for some procedures. We thought first it would be great for kids but everyone loves it. This is how we can help make dentistry taste great!
