The Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA) has acknowledged the challenges that Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) faces following the announcement that Mr Rohan Hammett will retire as TGA General Manager.
"The TGA faces a difficult task to ensure that the Australian community has access, within a reasonable time, to the latest dental product in an environment which balances patient safety whilst minimising unnecessary regulation that increases the cost of supplying quality dental product," said Troy Williams, ADIA Chief Executive Officer.
Reflecting upon Mr Hammett's leadership, Mr Williams said the changes now underway within the TGA will make the organisation more efficient and its operations more transparent. The reforms follow the release last month by the Australian Government of a document entitledTGA reforms: A blueprint for TGA's futurepublished in response to several reviews of the TGA's operations.
"ADIA looks forward to working with Mr Hammett's successor to ensure that the regulatory framework for the approval of dental product is based on a risk management approach designed to ensure public health and safety, while at the same time freeing industry from any unnecessary regulatory burden," Mr Williams said.
In concluding his remarks, Mr Williams said the dental industry wished Mr Hammett well for the future.
