Sydney Dental Hospital: 100 and still going strong

Sydney Dental Hospital is celebrating its centenary in August with an action packed week of festivities to coincide with Dental Awareness Month. Her Excellency, Governor of New South Wales, Professor Marie Bashir, has been invited to officially launch the festivities.

Sydney Dental Hospital general manager Graeme Angus said staff were looking forward to celebrating the 100-year anniversary.

"An exciting range of activities has been planned for the first week of August to showcase the progression of dental care and treatment available to the people of New South Wales," Mr Angus said.

The hospital, which has been located at the Central Railway Station site since 1912, was founded in 1904.

Central Sydney Area Health Service clinical director of Oral Health Services, Dr Susan Buchanan, said the hospital has played a major role in training oral health professionals over the past 100-years.

"The Sydney Dental Hospital has enjoyed a long history, along with The University of Sydney Faculty of Dentistry in helping to train a large proportion of the dental workforce of NSW."

Sydney Dental Hospital (SDH), which was formerly known as United Dental Hospital, is a state referral centre and major teaching hospital treating more than 200,000 patients a year.

SDH and The University of Sydney Faculty of Dentistry have worked closely together building an organisation that is at the forefront of patient service, research and education.

TAFE dental students are also trained at the hospital which features 137 dental chairs and units; an operating theatre; 40 clinical simulation units; and two lecture theatres and seminar rooms.
