First Dental believe they can save dentist up to $300 with its specialised service in replacing miniature bearings in high-speed handpieces.
Their motto is 'don't throw them away'. The problem is through autoclaving. Many handpieces wear out because constant autoclaving is affecting the life of the load bearing parts - the bearings - in the handpiece head. These can be changed up to a dozen times before the whole turbine needs replacing. This is because the only other parts that can be damaged are the impellor (turbine blades) and the spindle/chuck. The impeller can be damaged if the handpiece head is dented. The chuck only needs replacing if it won't hold a bur. First Dental says a new turbine can cost between $300 and $500, replacing bearings only cost $120. This service includes dismantling, cleaning, a test report on both torque and speed, replacing bearings with high quality Swiss made bearings and 'O' rings and lubrication. There is a 60-day guarantee and return by Express Post. Turnaround time is five days. Canister turbines are slightly more expensive - $150 - but still a great saving.
Other services include Kavo push button conversions (including complete new turbine) $299 with low speed handpieces and air motors are by quotation.
