Nobel Biocare has further perpetuated the live surgery principle for demonstrating implants and other clinical procedures to the profession by establishing a glass-walled operatory on the floor of their stand at the world's largest dental show, IDS 2007, in Cologne, Germany.
Well-known clinicians performed a range of procedures from single-tooth implants to edentulous jaw reconstructions with Procera Implant Bridges using the NobelGuide method, all in full view of the passing crowd. Some 35 implants, several bridges and other restorations were performed in 10 sessions over the five days of the show.
A camera crew inside the "goldfish bowl" broadcast detailed close-up shots to plasma screens located around the booth for an up close and personal view of all aspects of each procedure.
All aspects of NobelGuide were demonstrated step-by-step elsewhere on the Nobel Biocare booth. By converting CT or cone beam scans into a 3D model, all the preoperative preparation of the implant process and the replacement teeth is carried out on a model. The precise 1:1 translation of the preparation into an operating template and a master model demonstrate, in live surgery, the high reliability level of the template-guided implant process. Where a visual scan often assumes that there is not enough bone, the 3D model shows visitors that it is frequently possible to do implants without bone augmentation.
