New iLase: A breakthrough from Biolase

Biolase has launched its revolutionary new iLase diode laser at the annual Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting, setting new benchmarks in price, portability and ease of use. Hailed as the world's first truly cordless laser, the iLase is a completely self-contained, battery powered laser approximating the size of a whiteboard marker.

With 5 watts of peak laser power available, the iLase can be used for the full range of oral soft tissue surgical and hygiene procedures. The ten pre-set laser settings are selected by procedure type so clinicians no longer need worry about complex laser terminology. This unit is simplicity itself and incorporates a new Biolase patented pressure finger switch to fire the laser.

The iLase also uses the simple screw-in tips pioneered on Biolase's EZlase. The choice of different lengths and the ability to bend the tips to any desired angle means easy access for any part of the mouth.

Specialist periodontist Craig H. Rubinoff with Rancho Bernardo Periodontics used the laser in pre-launch trials in the USA. "The iLase feels very balanced in my hand. It feels very ergonomic. We can do everything that can be done with other soft-tissue lasers with this and not having a foot pedal is amazing."

"The iLase is so small, so portable and so attractively priced that we are marketing it as a personal laser," sais Peter Rowland, Vice President, Asia Pacific Operations for Biolase. "Its carrying case, including spare battery, is the size of an eye glasses case and can be carried in your pocket like a pen.

"More importantly however, it will deliver the best clinical results for patients. Our 940nm wavelength really does give easier cutting with better haemostasis and the proprietary Comfort- Pulse™ built into the laser gives maximum patient comfort and greatly enhanced tissue healing."
