With investments of more than $150 million a year in research and development, more than 400,000 participants annually at Dentsply Sirona clinical training courses and technologies that set standards, the company is demonstrating its innovative power once again at IDS.
"Our goal is to develop indispensable and groundbreaking products for the everyday routine in practice and lab and therefore make work even more successful and enjoyable for our customers," said Don Casey, Chief Executive Officer at Dentsply Sirona, at a press conference held at the start of the IDS 2019 in Cologne, Germany. He described the company's focus on new and further developed product solutions for dentistry. "We want to give dental professionals real added value with digital technologies that can be easily integrated and are an intelligent improvement in their routine workflows," he explained.
Digital impressions taken to the next level
With Primescan, the pioneer in digital impressions is presenting an intraoral scanner that embodies these principles and that offers new and previously unknown qualities. The scan can be carried out very easily, especially quickly, and is now even more accurate1 ‒ as proven in a recent study. As the system is open, the scan data can be used in many ways, such as to produce restorations with CEREC directly in the practice or have them made by the preferred lab – or for the fully digital production of SureSmile aligners for straightening teeth. For this, the scan is combined with a 2D X-ray and a photo of the patient. The aligners are planned and produced using the digital, Cloud-based software platform based on the proven SureSmile technology. Seamless, validated interfaces simplify the process, giving dentists the flexibility, they desire.
Pleasing esthetics, high precision of digital production
Users also have more options in restorative dentistry. Dentsply Sirona has expanded its extensive portfolio to include another material that can be digitally processed. Cercon xt ML is a multilayer zirconia with a natural-looking color gradient due to the different layers. The extra-translucent material does not need to be stained. Its "True Color Technology" ensures optimal color reliability in the classic VITA colors. Furthermore, Cercon xt ML can be processed with the same sintering programs and times as the familiar materials Cercon ht and Cercon xt.
A quantum leap in filling treatment
For users, it is ideal when familiar processes can be made even better. Dentsply Sirona landed a real coup with the development of Surefil one, an innovative filling concept for the posterior teeth region. Surefil one is a self-adhesive, robust restoration material that combines the simplicity of a glass ionomer with the stability of a conventional composite and also has good esthetic properties. With Surefil one, dentists can treat a cavity in just one layer, without adhesives or retentive preparation. This technology is indicated especially when there are clinical, time, or financial factors that limit the definitive restoration of a tooth by using a composite.
Substance preserving endodontics
Dentsply Sirona has developed TruNatomy, the first-ever complete solution for dentine preservation in endodontics – from the glide path to obturation. The new slim design of the files features an eccentric cross section and two cutting edges. This allows dentists to work even more safely while preserving more substance. The instrument adapts to the root canal better and removes dentine only where clinically necessary, thus better preserving the structure of the remaining tooth substance. The TruNatomy system considerably improves endodontic treatments and creates genuine added value for dentists and patients.
New innovations for implant dentistry
Dentsply Sirona has two new products that will also be the start of a new era in implant dentistry – Acuris and Azento. Acuris represents the best of two worlds: a retention that is removable for the dentist but fixed for the patient. Acuris is based on a conometric concept that uses friction instead of a screw or cement to secure the crown and the cap to the abutment in the final prosthetic part of the implant treatment. With Acuris, placing the final crown takes seconds rather than minutes—you only need to click once to place the crown with the unique Fixation Tool. Azento is the latest digital implant workflow solution that streamlines the implant planning, purchasing and delivery for single tooth replacement. It includes all components and instruments necessary to carry out implant treatment ‒ including a surgical guide, a Dentsply Sirona implant (Astra Tech Implant System EV and Xive), and a custom healing abutment.
Digital imaging is becoming smarter and more customized
The requirements for extraoral digital imaging are different for each practice. Dentsply Sirona's answer to this is the "Orthophos family." With three different Orthophos models with varying performance features, every user – whether a general or specialized dentist – can use the latest X-ray technology. All devices use the prize-winning Sidexis 4 V 4.3 imaging software with optimal image quality and sophisticated imaging functions – including a 3D Endo layout to simplify endodontic examinations as well as STL import and new image filters.
Partnerships and intelligent concepts
"Crucial product developments are always made in close collaboration with dentists or dental technicians," said Bill Newell, Chief Segment Officer at Dentsply Sirona. "Working with our partners in practices and labs makes us so much more innovative as a company." This is supported through cooperation with external partners – the latest example is the recent agreement made with exocad. This teamwork also needs to come alive in the practice routine according to Newell. "It is important to us that practices and labs can work efficiently with our products and experience an added value every day. We support them in this, for example, with product demonstrations and an unparalleled offering of training courses. And at this year's IDS, we show once again that customers and partners can rely on Dentsply Sirona and trust our innovative strength – today and especially in the future."
