IDEM Singapore 2014: Inaugural New Dentist Forum

Events

New for 2014, IDEM Singapore is pleased to announce that there will be special educational and networking events for the New Dentist!

New Dentists - those within 7 years of graduating with a dental degree and final year dental students - will have the opportunity of not only attending the main IDEM Singapore sessions with all the world-class clinicians presenting, but will have two unique and exclusive sessions just for themselves additional to and beyond the main scientific programme.

These fast-paced and highly interactive activities will include such topics as:

  • Selecting Career Pathways;
  • Navigating the university-to-work and student-to-professional transitions;
  • Lifelong Learning and sourcing credible evidence-based information - Art or Science; fact or fiction?; and
  • A cutting-edge clinical topic presented entirely with the needs of the New Dentist in mind.

The two exclusive sessions will be in round-table format, styled around the needs of 21st century learners and allow for interactivity between presenter and audience and peer-to-peer among the participants themselves.

Presenters and session facilitators will be role-models and mentors who will talk from both bitter and sweet personal life experiences helping and guiding participants to a successful early stage career in the profession of dentistry and building a foundation for a fulfilling future.

Attendance will be limited to ensure optimum interactivity!

Day 1 Friday April 4, 2014 - 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Planning your post-grad journey: Career pathways, continued professional development and All-on-4®

Presenter: Nilesh Measuria, Australia

After graduating in 2005 and having already faced the daunting task of deciding his career pathway, Nilesh will guide you through his own journey with references to his various working environments. With often frank reflection, he will explain his decisions that have led him to his passion for full mouth rehabilitation using the "All-on-4" technique.

By helping others identify their own strengths and areas for improvement, Nilesh will discuss the use of personal development plans, on-line educational resources and the role of traditional academic training programmes.

Nilesh received his dental degree from the University of Leeds in 2005 and has since explored a wide variety of career opportunities including maxillofacial surgery, high security prison dentistry and outback dentistry with the Australian Royal Flying Dental Service. He is currently working at the Sydney Implant Institute.

Day 2 Saturday April 4, 2014 - 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Presenters: Edwin Heng, Singapore Terence Jee, Singapore

This second element of the New Dentist Forum features two speakers with very contrasting yet complimentary backgrounds who will share with the audience the pathways they have taken in their early dental careers, and the good (and not-so-good) decisions along the way in becoming skilled dental professionals. They will use commonly encountered every-day clinical scenarios to show how they have used the knowledge and experience gained in the dental school, together with many 'lessons of life' in developing positive relationships with patients and members of the dental team to create beneficial working environments focused on greater clinical outcomes. The session will conclude with an audience-led moderated discussion.

Management of Bleeding Gums, Deep Pockets and Dentin Hypersensitivity

Dr Heng will lead an interactive presentation to cover the primary goals of periodontal treatment, the eradication of disease and the restoration of oral health as well as the basic principles of treatment for dentin hypersensitivity. These commonly seen clinical scenarios will create the framework for the audience to learn much about making important life decisions as well as the benefits of lifelong learning and obtaining credible information through evidence-based dentistry.

Distressed Patients and Oro-facial Pain

Dr Jee will lead an interactive presentation to cover the many challenges he has encountered since the major milestone of graduating from dental school. He will open up the challenges of clinical practice such as managing patient's expectation, as well as the conflicts of knowledge, passion and zest tempered by the pragmatism of treatment guidelines. The management of distressed patients presenting with oro-facial pain will create the framework for the audience to learn from past experiences of peers as they evolve to become better clinicians. Guidelines to endodontic diagnosis, including dentin hypersensitivity, and effective management of endodontic emergencies will also be discussed.

2014 New Dentist Forum presented in collaboration with Appolina Global Health Sciences and sponsored by GSK and Smile-on Healthcare Learning.
