Finnish Consulate hosts Highlights in Imaging Tour

By Joseph Allbeury

Radiography Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Planmeca, in conjunction with the Consulate of Finland, Sydney, held its Highlights in Imaging Tour at the Observatory Hotel in late February. The event previewed a number of start-of-the-art developments in imaging software for Planmeca products to be launched by the Finnish company at IDS in Germany this month.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr Paul Coceanig, who practices in Newcastle and Macquarie University Private Hospital in Sydney, was the guest presenter for the night. Dr Coceanig gave insight into his experience utilizing the new Planmeca ProMax 3D Max unit that offers both large field of view 3D cone beam imagery as well as panoramic radiographs.

"Cone beam computed tomography systems are constantly evolving," Dr Coceanig said, "and desktop computers are also getting faster and more powerful. This allows us to see more and in more detail and then do more with that information in our practices. The software is becoming more and more amazing and it's hard to believe what 3D rendering can do today."

Dr Coceanig recently became the first person in the southern hemisphere to own the new Planmeca ProMax 3D Max cone beam imaging system after upgrading his existing Planmeca ProMax OPG unit. He spoke on the night about his experiences with the large field of view system.

"There are many CBCT systems on the market today and my decision to upgrade to a ProMax 3D Max unit from Planmeca was carefully considered," he said. "Planmeca's new digital 100 micron receptor plate is clearly a market leader and it has been incorporated into a very stable platform that is proven in the market.

"The latest ProFace software Planmeca has released is also truly amazing. I believe it will change the way dentists, orthodontists, surgeons and patients will see faces... rather than being a personality or a surface you apply makeup to, faces are truly changing, absorbing and evolving parts of our health and well-being, completely characterized by the underlying topology of bone and teeth.

"Then there are the technologies that will evolve from that, like predictive 4D software for facial volumetric surgery, or how we may perceive a missing person may have aged. ProFace is the beginning of something huge and for a humble facial surgeon. I want to be a part of that from the very beginning."

Dr Coceanig was joined by members of the Finnish Embassy, Planmeca Oy, Body Logic resources and Australian agents, Henry Schein Halas. The next edition will feature an extended interview on the his experiences with these new technologies.
