Broken Hill dentist Greg Cocks has waved the dental flag in the recent Classic Adelaide car rally. The 5-day event held annually in October, attracts numerous international competitors to participate in one of the world's best historic motorsport events.
Dr Cocks piloted his immaculately prepared 1970 Datsun 240Z, resplendent in its striking Colgate livery. After five days of competition, tarmac rally novices Greg and his navigator Guy Chick, also from Broken Hill, had risen from last place at the start of the prologue to a commendable 52nd outright. They were more notably 4th in the most hotly contested of the heritage categories, a result which brought some acclamation from the event organisers and other competitors. Along the way, they found time to spread the word on Dental Health and distributed over 400 kits of Colgate Total toothbrushes, toothpaste samples and promotional literature.
Geoff Bills, the owner of Hackney Dental Laboratories in Adelaide, also participated in the event, having the honour of being the navigator for Sir Jack Brabham, Australia's triple World Formula One Champion, competing in the Parade section in a magnificent Mercedes-Benz SL500 convertible. They led the 200 competing vehicles away each day from the gala start at the Hilton Hotel in Victoria Square to a different picturesque area around Adelaide for the day's competition. One of the most memorable highlights, according to Mr Bills, was negotiating the well-known Gorge road at very high speed and being overtaken by an even faster Porsche.
