Following the October 2003 acquisition of dental implant manufacturer Centerpulse (formerly Sulzer/Calcitek) by Zimmer, the new division has officially been renamed Zimmer Dental. Based in Warsaw, Indiana, USA, Zimmer is a leader in the design, development, manufacture and marketing of reconstructive orthopedic, spinal and dental implants, trauma products and related orthopedic surgical products.
According to the company, Zimmer Dental is now focusing efforts on integration activities to maximize the assets of the Zimmer and Centerpulse organizations. The Dental division, with its unique market focus, will remain a stand-alone business unit within Zimmer. This will allow the Dental group to operate within the Zimmer family for internal resources and services while maintaining autonomy in areas such as distribution, manufacturing, new product development and educational programs.
"Dental is one of the fastest growing sectors within the medical device arena," said Steven Hanson, President of Zimmer Dental. "With supportive demographics, a high potential for increased use of dental implants as a first choice in the standard of care and continued clinical experience, this market will demonstrate impressive growth for the foreseeable future."
Zimmer Dental, is a California-based operation. The company, which started in 1981 as a member of the Sulzer Medica consortium of medical device manufacturers, has six direct sales offices and 49 distributors worldwide that sell products and programs to dental clinicians in over 47 countries.
