The CS 3600 intraoral scanner from Carestream Dental is known for its smart scanning technology, but the latest upgrades to its acquisition software have taken the CS 3600 from smart to genius.
"Smart technology is rapidly changing all sectors of industry, including digital dentistry," said Ed Shellard, DMD, chief dental officer, Carestream Dental. "But being labeled as 'smart' doesn't go far enough. Technology needs to respond to users' needs in real time and be intuitive to use. When you combine all these things, you get a scanner that's truly intelligent, like the CS 3600."
New intelligent scanning features
In fact, intelligent scanning is the most significant update to the CS 3600's acquisition software. This includes the ability to scan in high-resolution for improved quality and clinical details. Real-time scanning feedback further enhances the scan quality, eliminating the "double-impression" issue so many scanners are prone to. This feedback significantly increases efficiency by reducing repetitive rescanning and image rendering due to missed data.
"These quality check warnings make using the intraoral scanner more intuitive and help all users, from new to experienced, get an accurate, complete scan every time before they render the digital impression," Dr Shellard said.
Updates to the restorative workflow include the ability to detect and alert users to possible undercuts while the patient is still in the chair. If not suitable, the preparation can be adjusted and rescanned on the spot, rather than dealing with back-and-forth communications between the practice and laboratory, which could require the patient to return for an additional appointment.
Lock previously scanned areas
Users can also select and lock up to six previously scanned preparation areas to prevent them from being updated by additional scanning, with the convenient restoration locking tool. This feature can be used to lock retracted gingiva immediately after scanning, as the tissue may collapse and otherwise possibly degrade the scan area.
Doctors using the implant-borne restorative workflow of the scanner will benefit from the innovative scanbody area selection tool that allows users to select the region around the scanbody to prevent an image mismatch that can occur when using multiple scanbodies on a single case. Once scanned, the user unselects the area where the scanbody is located; the new scan will only replace the area within the selected area.
"This uniquely designed tool was included in the update in direct response to feedback from current scanner users who are placing implants," Dr Shellard said. "It significantly improves the quality of complex restoration cases with multiple-scan bodies for optimal implant-borne restorations."
More efficient orthodontic workflow
To make the orthodontic workflow even more efficient, the update allows for 2D intraoral quadrant "snapshots" to be extracted from the digital impression. Extracted 2D HD images include left buccal, right buccal, centre, upper occlusal and lower occlusal, as well as a five-in-one composite image.
