According to the American Dental Association, based in Chicago, there are currently 66 accredited dental schools in the US.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, there were 25,010 students enrolled in predoctoral dental education programs - up from 24,677 the previous year. Of the 2017-2018 students, 49.6% were female. The class of 2017 was 48.5% female. For 2017-2018 students, the average first-year cost of dental school reached US$50,770 for state residents and US$68,403 for non-residents. The cost of public dental school sits at US$37,877 on average while students attending private school average US$67,087 for their first year. In 2017-18, 600 graduates of international dental schools were admitted to US dental schools with advanced standing, up from 564 the previous year, but down from a peak of 646 in 2013-14. In 2017-18, non-resident aliens made up 2.9% of first-year students and 5.3% of graduates.
